PlantBuzz is now part of the Lawn.com.au family. Rewind the clock a few years and Plantbuzz.com was the starting point to Mark McDonough’s eclectic horticultural musings and illustrated plant studies on the web. On PlantBuzz, you could access several areas of horticultural study that monopolized Mark’s attention over a 30 year period. The most popular section and the which Mark had the greatest ambition for was Allium Central, the goal being the most complete resource on the web dedicated to the genus Allium. With a similar scarcity of on-line information as Allium, the hardy hibiscus are a wonderful group of woody shrubs and herbaceous perennials worthy of greater prominence in gardens and literature. You could also visit the Hardy Hibiscus Home to learn more about these beautiful late-blooming plants. To round out the miscellany of horticultural topics, Cleome Studies provided information on this large genus of showy annual plants, for which only a few species are known and grown. And last, there was Mark’s ever-popular Rock Gardening page, a miscellany unto itself, exploring any and all alpine, rock garden, and woodland plants that interested him. The synergy in mission between PlantBuzz and Lawn.com.au might not be immediately apparent, it certainly exists. Whilst Lawn.com.au provides professional services, such as lawn mowing, gardening services, hedge trimming and NDIS, it also has a strong mission of education through it’s horticulture blog and work with author Jamie Donovan. The Allium genus is much neglected, and it is with this in mind that Lawn.com.au wanted to keep the work of Mark McDonough’s PlantBuzz going when it no longer had legs of its own. Our planet is home to an incredible variety of horticulture. The sheer number of plants means that the work to document and educate others on the lesser-known ones is critical. That’s why PlantBuzz has partnered with the Lawn.com.au family. To continue to educate the wider public and aspiring horticulturalists on the beautiful world we have around us. What To Plant In Brisbane In WinterWinter is a gardener’s foe, but it doesn’t have to be! In fact, winter can be a fun time. For Brisbane, the winter season starts in June and ends in September. You will experience chilly days, which will surely affect your garden and what you can sow at the time. Now, it will be hard to enjoy the beautiful winter weather when you’re worrying about what you should plant. With that in mind, here is a guide to help you know what to grow in Brisbane winter! 1) Trees, Shrubs, and VinesBare-rooted deciduous trees, shrubs, and vines are best planted during the Australian winter. This can range from rose bushes to fruit trees! Because of the difficult weather, it’s important to keep in mind that there are other tasks to take note of before and after planting to get the best possible results. Before planting, soak the roots in seaweed solution for approximately thirty (30) minutes. Studies show that seaweed improves plant respiration, so it is used for faster root growth – perfect for the winter! Pay close attention when making the solution to ensure that the measurements are exact – ¼ teaspoon of seaweed extract and added into 950 mL warm water. This will ensure maximum benefits. Once you finish planting, don’t forget to water well. You should be done with planting bare-rooted deciduous trees, shrubs and vines before the middle of August! 2) Spring FlowersBring colour to your garden with annual spring flowers! By July, you should be finishing up on planting spring flowering buds. To ensure that these bulbs grow well, you should plant them no less than three times as deep as the width of the bulb. Take note that planting seeds for spring annuals in winter may be too late. We recommend using seedlings or buds. However, if you want to plant seeds for later flowering, there are still a variety of spring-flowering seeds that you can use as long as you plant them in frost-free areas. An exception to the spring flowering buds’ schedules and technique are tulips. Tulips should be planted in late July to receive a specific amount of time under the morning sun. With around four hours of morning sunshine, you will be able to produce stronger plants with more beautiful and long-lasting flower colours. It is also recommended to plant tulip buds at 15 cm deep. 3) VegetablesIn general, seed germination is difficult during the winter. They’re slow to grow and susceptible to rotting. However, it’s not impossible to plant vegetables with the weather! You can start by eyeing warm spots that are free from frost in June. Vegetables such as tomato, eggplant, and cucurbits (pumpkin, zucchini) can be planted in pots for minimal disturbance. You can also try to plant a variety of vegetables such as beets, cabbage, lettuce, peas, and radishes. ConclusionChange in seasons means also having to adjust your tasks depending on your plants’ needs. You need to know which ones to prune and propagate at this time, as well as the necessary measures needed to keep your plants healthy. These are all needed in order to make sure that your garden is maintained. However, many Australian families would like to enjoy this season by going on a vacation or snuggling up inside the house to keep warm. Without anyone to care for your plants, your garden will definitely be at risk. This is where Lawn.com.au saves the day! With expert gardening services in Brisbane, your garden will be maintained in top shape even throughout the cooler season. Now, you and your garden are ready to take on the Brisbane winter! The post What To Plant In Brisbane In Winter appeared first on Lawn.com.au. via Lawn.com.au https://ift.tt/2BTGiCY How To Start An Urban GardenBeautiful images and stories online can easily inspire you to start your own garden. With the modern movement on urban and sustainable living, people in cities can now enjoy gardens in their homes as well. The process may be challenging, but with the right guide on how to start an urban garden, it’s sure to be fun and fulfilling! To help you out, here are important steps to keep in mind to bring your dream garden to life. 1) Seeds: Brainstorming Plans and IdeasThe “seed” or the beginning of your garden is your ideas! Like any other DIY project, it’s best to go about it with a strategy. Where do you want to have your urban garden? It can be as simple as on your windowsill or your balcony. The space dedicated to your garden will tell you what type of plants you can have based on size and exposure to sunlight. With that in mind, do you have any particular plants that you want to grow? You can opt for delicious herbs that you can use to take your cooking to the next level, or beautiful flowers to make you feel more at home. If you’re up for it, you can have a little of both! 2) Growth: Preparing and PlantingIt’s now time to get your pots, seeds, and soil ready! Once you already have a good idea of how to utilise your space, you can decide on how many pots you want to get. Be careful not to overcrowd your plants so they don’t have to compete for sunlight. Gardening with pots is a little more difficult than embedded gardening. An important factor to remember is your soil. Since your plants aren’t outdoors with access to rich minerals found in the earth, the soil you have to use requires more nutrients than typical gardening soil. Go further with organic fertilizers to enrich your soil. Now, the most important part of the process – it’s time to plant! Hopefully, you’ve decided on whether you want to start with seeds or seedlings. Seeds have to be grown from scratch, which is more difficult but fulfilling to most gardeners. Seedlings, on the other hand, have already sprouted. If you’re rushing to harvest from your garden soon, this is the choice for you! Before planting, make sure that you’ve read up on proper care routines for the plants of your choosing. 3) Bloom: Maintaining Your GardenYour garden can reach its potential and bloom with proper maintenance! First off, make sure to be alert on how your plants are growing in the first few days and weeks. Since you’re working with pots, you can easily move your plants around to adjust the layout to their elemental needs. Also know that gardening can bring out the best in you. By caring for your garden, you can improve your skills in gardening through practice and a desire to do better! This keeps things interesting and fun, but it makes maintaining your garden much harder. Fortunately, a reliable gardening service is available in Brisbane with Lawn.com.au. Australia is known for its wide variety of wildlife. In a single Aussie garden, you’ll find numerous creatures! Although some insects are beneficial for your plants, some are just plain destructive. You can protect your garden from these pests by familiarising yourself with what they are and how to handle them. The Most Common Ways To Rid Your Yard Of Harmful InsectsProtecting your garden doesn’t have to be costly or complicated. There are simple and organic methods that will work wonders for your garden if done properly! Here are our top ways to get rid of garden pests. 1) HandpickingSimply picking out certain pests in your garden by hand is already more effective than using expensive chemicals that may also harm your plants. Don’t be afraid to pick certain pests and squash them to make sure they don’t go back to your garden. Some people actually use them to feed their poultry! This method is common for eliminating aphids, certain beetles, cutworms, and other bugs. 2) Tidying UpA clean garden is a safer garden! By tidying up, you’ll be able to destroy or minimise the breeding sites of certain pests. Set a day or two each week when you’ll prune infested or unhealthy plants. It might be simple, but it’s definitely a plant saver! This method is usually used for handling snails, slugs, and scales infestations. 3) Encouraging Native PredatorsPests are still a part of the food chain. You can reduce their number by enhancing the garden’s environment to invite more native predators. Utilising birds and predatory insects are a sure way to get rid of common pests such as caterpillars, beetles, plant bugs, grasshoppers, aphids, and a lot more.
4) Strong Spray Of WaterAside from just nourishing your plants, using water is a great way to get rid of certain pests! A strong jet of water can knock off pests from your plants and sometimes it can be strong enough to drown them. Take note if the pests are still alive after knocking them off, you have to make sure to eliminate them thoroughly so they won’t go back! Water is usually used to get rid of mealybugs, scales, aphids, bugs, certain beetles, and mites. 5) Oil And InsecticidesGardeners usually have a stock of oil and insecticides to quickly handle any pests. The most commonly used oils are neem and horticultural oils. These are natural repellents and restrict the growth of most pests! These are especially effective against aphids, beetles, leafminers, bugs, grasshoppers, psyllids, and whiteflies. Organic and botanical pesticides are strong, but not as recommended as the other methods. Pesticides can also harm beneficial insects that you might need to keep your garden healthy. However, you can opt to use pesticides when handling white flies, white curl grubs, and other severe infestations. Spring Into Action!Protecting your garden is not just a one-time thing. Don’t forget that maintenance and prevention are key. It may be overwhelming, but bringing out the best in your garden is possible by springing into action! There’s just one thing – professional gardening services aren’t free. Depending on the calibre of the gardener and the type of work you need to be done, hiring a professional gardener can cost anywhere from $30 to $120 per hour. For something as simple as weeding, you can expect to pay around $30, while you can get a quote of $120 per hour for something more complicated and labour intensive. To help you figure out how much to pay for gardening services, in this article, we’ll be answering various questions, starting with what a professional gardener does. What Does A Professional Gardener Do?You can hire a professional gardener on a one-off or regular basis to care for your yard and garden. The gardener can take care of everything related to your yard, or, if you’re willing to do some basic maintenance yourself, the gardener can handle the more complicated aspects of your lawn care. Some of the most popular professional gardening services include garden design, landscaping, lawn mowing, and more. What’s The Cost Of Working With A Gardener?Like we said, how much a gardener charges depends on the gardener and the type of gardening job you have in mind. The simplest gardening tasks usually cost around $30 per hour. More complex gardening jobs that require expert knowledge and the use of specialised tools can cost between $60 and $80 per hour. Some gardeners charge hourly while others charge a flat rate. For gardening jobs that are more about size than complexity, such as mowing, the cost will depend on the size of the area that requires work. You can typically get a better deal if you have a recurring gardening arrangement with the gardener. For example, a monthly recurring mowing may cost $40 to $50, while a one-off mowing job may cost $60. Prices for other straightforward gardening services include:
For an accurate quote for a more complex gardening job, it’s best to get a quote directly from the gardening company. How To Pick The Best GardenerThere are several factors to consider when trying to pick a gardener for your yard. One of the biggest factors is price. However, our advice is to never pick a gardener simply because their quote is the lowest. Rather, look at the following:
A quality gardener will have all of the above. You can then compare quotes from various top gardeners and pick one who offers the best price without compromising on any of the above features. To help make your garden maintenance more effective and satisfying, here are some tips from our expert gardeners. Inspect Plants Before Adding To Your YardIf you already have a flourishing yard, be careful with what you add to it. Why? Introducing the wrong plant or a diseased one can lead to a catastrophe that destroys everything you’ve already built. To avoid adding an unhealthy plant that can spread disease, you need to know what to look out for. Avoid introducing plants to your garden if they have rotted stems or roots, dead spots, or insects scurrying around their body or roots. Also, the roots of a plant should be white and firm. If they’re dark or mushy, then it’s a no-no for your garden. To further reduce the risk of diseases spreading through your garden, plant disease-resistant varieties of flora. Only Use Yard Waste That’s Fully CompostedMaking your own compost is a great way to save money on fertiliser and enrich your soil. That said, compost is usually made up of various decaying materials that don’t decompose at the same rate. When waste isn’t fully composted, it won’t generate a high enough temperature to kill the harmful pathogens that may be in it. Such pathogens can cause great harm to your garden. If you can’t tell when waste is fully composted, it’s best to avoid using it. Watch Out For PestsA bug infestation can decimate your garden, especially if you are growing fruits or vegetables. Aside from eating your plants, bugs like aphids and leafhoppers carry viruses that can cause even more damage to your garden. You can get rid of such bugs by applying the right repellents. Don’t Leave Dead Leaves Lying AroundDead leaves decompose and enrich the earth, but they can also serve as a breeding ground for bugs and diseases, especially during the fall season. To be on the safe side, rake fallen leaves off your garden and properly dispose of them as soon as possible. Use The Right FertiliserFertiliser has a host of benefits, but only when you use the right one in the right amount. For instance, applying too much fertiliser can burn a plant’s roots and reduce its ability to absorb water. To find the right fertiliser to apply, do a soil test to identify which ingredients your soil is lacking. If you’d prefer for a professional to help you take care of your garden, give us a call today for a free quote. Provide The Right Amount Of WaterToo much water will drown your plants and create a breeding ground for diseases, while too little water can cause your plants to wilt. For the best results, avoid spraying water directly on a plant’s leaves, and water in the morning before the day starts to get hot. Site Plants AppropriatelySome plants require maximum sunlight, while others require little. For best results, identify what conditions a plant thrives in and site it accordingly. Also, avoid placing plants too close to one another as this can lead to increased humidity and spread diseases. Follow these tips and your garden will be off to a great start!
